Where whimsy takes your heart!

Watercolorist Janey Ryan doesn’t just think outside the box….she paints outside of it, too!

One day, Janey was making an attempt to downsize her “stuff”. She came across a beautiful watercolor box - a Christmas gift to her oldest daughter, Melody - and knew it couldn’t be added to the pile. It was too precious!

She COULD say “and the rest is history”, but the story’s too lovely.

She sat down one day in 2018, a 5×7 piece of watercolor paper before her on a tiny corner desk in her den, and painted her first thing: a peacock.

She had NO idea what she was doing. She’d never painted with watercolors before!

Janey says: “My memory is quite vivid on what happened next. I posted this little peacock on my FaceBook page and within minutes, a good friend asked if I would sell it to him!!!! “Seriously?” I asked. “You know I don’t know what I’m doing, right?!” He was serious & he didn’t care. He liked it.”

And so it began…..

I seem to gravitate toward birds, critters and quotes…

From years of classroom bulletin board “art”, Janey drew on that kind of creative effort. The years of coloring inside the lines were over. There were scribbles and color splashes to be had!

Here are more examples of Janey’s art…

TMI about Janey - A Texas native, Janey graduated college with a Bachelor of Music Education degree and spent her professional years teaching public & private choral music to students from Kindergarten through College. Her favorite age to teach was Middle School kids! She also directed several church & community choirs along the way, including SoCo Women’s Chorus in Austin, Texas, which she Founded and was Artistic Director from 2012-2020. (The chorus is still alive and singing!)

With a concentration in Voice, Janey also sang on stages all across the world! If you stay awhile, she’ll namedrop like a banshee! Names and places like Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, Houston Grand Opera, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim (who thanked her for her high D-flat in Sweeney Todd’s chorus!). It’s been a colorful life! So, she just continued that thought on paper!

Janey is a proud Mom to two daughters, Melody Claire & Erin Parker; and her best gift? Her grandson, James!

She lives in the lovely town of Hendersonville, North Carolina with wife, Sheri, terrorist puppy, Remy and ninja kitty, The Princess Sweet Pea.
